Connect iCloud Mail
Generating an app-specific password at Apple and connecting the iCloud mailbox.
On this page
iCloud Mail can be connected over IMAP. Two details differ from other providers: the user name and the password.
The details#
- IMAP server: imap.mail.me.com
- Email address: only the part before the @ (so anna for anna@icloud.com). If it is rejected, enter the full address.
- Password: an app-specific password, see below. Your Apple password will not work here.
- Encryption: SSL/TLS on port 993. Apple does not offer STARTTLS on port 143.
Generating an app-specific password#
This requires two-factor authentication on your Apple Account.
- Sign in at account.apple.com.
- Under “Sign-In and Security”, choose “App-Specific Passwords”.
- Choose “Generate an app-specific password” and give it a name, “Documont” for example.
- Apple shows the password once. Copy it into the “Password” field in Documont.
When the connection fails later on#
If you change or reset your Apple password, Apple revokes every app-specific password. The source then reads “Needs attention”, and the collection reports “Your provider rejected these credentials” → When connecting doesn’t work. Generate a new app-specific password and set the connection up again; documents already filed are kept.
